Martial Arts Bio

Although I was unaware of its significance at the time, 1964 was the beginning of my Martial Arts journey.  Judo, taught by Sensei Paul Brown, was my first introduction to the art when my brother and I joined the YMCA in Peterborough.

Around 1965, I learned my first Karate Kata, in a backyard Dojo in my home village of Omemee, with Sensei Kenny Hum. From that moment on, I was hooked.

Fifty years later,  I am still hooked,  the main sytles of karate, Silat and plus teach a System called, Kem Ka Ju

Formal Training and Teachers:

Around 1972/73, I began studying karate with Sensei Mark Bell, at the Jiyu-Shin School in Peterborough.  The Style was Chito-Ryu. Unfortunately, I do not know his martial arts lineage.

During the late 1960s and early 1970’s training with Sensei Murray Winters, I believe he was a student of Sensei/Sifu Quai Wong, Quai Wong Kung Fu Society, Toronto Dojo.

Around 1974/75, I began studying with Shihan Allan Gill, at the Cobra Tai Chi School in Peterborough, which was a combination of Shotokan, Goju-Ryu and Tai Chi. Again, I don’t know his martial arts lineage.

Still searching for the school that was right for me.

What changed for me was around 1975/76  I joined Benny’s House of Karate in Peterborough under the mentorship and guidance of Soke/Shihan Benny Rudolph, a 3 time European Heavy weight Full contact champion,  2 time Dutch Full Contact Champion and All American Black Belt Full Contact Champion.

Soke Ben was a winner at Ed Parker’s tournament in California in the early 1970’s.   I have continued to  studied, train and teacher with Soke/Shihan Ben for over 45 years.  Today, we focus our training on Penjak Silat

Soke Benny Rudolph at Benny’s House of Karate in Peterborough, his extensive Martial Arts lineage is outlined below.

Sensei Ben’s training began as a young boy in East Java, training in Silat. He then began his Kempo training at a Shaolin Temple near his Salvation Army orphanage.  As East Java is a Dutch Protectorate, he did his compulsory military service joining the Dutch Special Forces.  Once finished his military obligation, he continued his training under the numerous European Masters, John Dick Schilder; head of Judokwai Velp, Arnheim, Holland, Johannes Cornelius Bluming a Dutch instructor of Judo, Kyokushin Karate, and Mixed martial arts.  Sensei Ben was an active full contact competitor in 1960/70’s tournaments, he was the Dutch Full Contact Champion (three times), a European Full Contact Champion (twice) and an All-American Black Belt Full Contact Champion.  He also operated several schools in Holland before immigrating to Canada in the early 1970s.

Soke Ben is gifted Martial Artist, proficient and personally trained in many East Asian Martial Arts (Silat) and different Karate styles by some of the great Japanese, and European Masters of the Martial Arts.

He was a student of Master Hirokazu Kanazawa, Sensei Keinosuke Enoeda, and Sensei Katsutaro Takahashi, all direct students of Shotokan Founder Gichin Funakoshi.

When Sensei Ben came to Canada, he delivered Jiu-Jitsu seminars for Canadian Grand Master Ron Forrester and Karate/Kung Fu Seminars for Sifu/Sensei Quai Wong in Toronto.

Under the mentorship of Sensei Ben, I achieved my Shodan around 1981/82.  Since then Sensei Ben has guided, mentored and promoted me to 6th, Dan.

Shihan Ben  granted and bestowed on me, the titles of Sensei in Karate, Sifu in Shaolin Kempo, and Guru in Silat.  In 2016, Soke Ben bestowed the title Shihan.

With the good fortune to build a great foundation under Soke Ben,  I began to train with many Grand Masters such as the late Professor Ed McLachlan, and GM Harold Mayle.

My training  continues under the mentorship of  Soke Mike Bissonnette, USA GM Doctor Robert Hawkins,  GM Hanshi Carlos Montalvo, Soke Frank Tasetano, and Grand Master Dan McEaddy.
