There are plenty of techniques a woman can use against an attacker/mugger who thinks she won’t fight back, if your attacker thinks of you as a victim, this is your advantage.

With confidence and knowledge and trusting your techniques a  woman can hopefully buy a little extra time to escape.

You should never want to stand flat footed and fight to the finish with anyone.  Even the best fighters in the world lose, you want to escape, that is your goal.

We will be introducing a series of practical self defence techniques to allow you to gain the time to escape.

You have the right to go home to your family! This is the beginning of a series of posts dedicated to self defense for women. This is for you, so your suggestions, are important, you can message me or just comment. I will answer your questions and develop self defence techniques around your suggestions or concerns.

The goal of this series is to help women to not only defend themselves but to prepare them mentally, so with that said let’s get started with some basics.

Part #1 Mindset and how not to be a victim

From the time we are young we are taught not to be AGRESSSIVE. This is hard to overcome without some prior thought and mental conditioning. Anytime you come across a situation where you fear for your safety you have two choices, fight or flight. But it isn’t that simple.

The attacker is counting on fear to paralysis you for those few seconds until he gains control. This series is about those few seconds where you maintain this control.

We will be looking at how not to be a victim, by being aware of your surroundings, and the tools you have on you.

Your first line of defence is not to become a victim. Remember attackers are not always thugs hiding in alley ways. They can be your neighbours, roommate’s boyfriend, classmate, family member as well as strangers. Don’t be paranoid, just be aware.

If you become a victim flight is at all times your best option, but this option may not always be available to you. If you feel threatened run and while you run scream as loud as you can, make all the noise you can to attract attention, in many cases, convicted attackers tell the police afterwards that if the victim had just screamed they would have left them alone. However if you cannot escape by running away, you are trapped, have no choice, then defend yourself. You need to be in a certain mindset, and for most people men and women, this will be the hardest part to overcome. You have to commit to your course of action. My Sensei tells us when we are in the fight for our life, speed and violence, is the way home to your family.

You can’t do this scared and screaming, you must be in control. So in order to get this control you will need to train your mind, create a trigger. A trigger is simply a mental image or thought. The image of your child and family, or the thought of not being around their loved ones. but your trigger must be powerful enough to motivate you to action. Now practice using your trigger because like everything else practice is important.   In later posts I will be adding videos to demonstrate some techniques that will help you defend yourself.

Awareness and preparedness

Awareness is probably your best defense against attack; it will help you spot obvious threats beforehand and gives you those valuable seconds of reaction time needed to escape. Don’t be paranoid just be aware. In addition to your awareness you must also be prepared. This will give you the ability to do something if you are attacked.

Don’t walk around with your head down. Doing this not only takes away from your awareness its marks you as an easy target. Criminals are predators, they sit back and watch for people who are distracted. Whether it’s a cell phone or iPod, if you’re distracted, it’s easy to be taken by surprise. Keep your head up and looking around. Criminals don’t want to attack someone who will see them coming. Don’t be paranoid just be aware.

Don’t walk close to walls. Doing this minimizes your angle of view into alleyways and deep doorways. It also shortens reaction times. Walking away from the wall allows you to see into the alleyway or doorway before you actually get to it giving you those few valuable seconds. Any sign of trouble, change your direction by crossing the street or grab the closest taxi. Anything you can do to get away from the threat. The most ideal place to walk is the centre of the sidewalk. Threats can come from both sides. So keep your head up and be aware.

Don’t get taken away. This is probably the most important one. Once the criminal has you, he can take you to someplace secluded. There they can do whatever they want and as anybody that keeps up with the news knows, most abduction cases end in tragedy. The best way to avoid being taken is to keep your distance from anyone you feel is a threat. If they advance on you, you must retreat. If your exit is blocked remember your trigger and use it. Attack the eyes, throat, groin and any sensitive areas you can, and no matter what body part you choose to attack the most important thing is to do something. You must escape. Your life depends on it.

These all may seem like common sense things to do. The hardest part is making the conscious effort to do it. And just like your trigger, you will need to practice it. Next time you are out shopping, try to spot those areas that attacks can come from. Be conscious of who’s around you and look around for escape routes. And remember, don’t be paranoid just be aware.
